London pay: Metropolitan and City of London Police

Officers of the Metropolitan Police and City of London Police are paid two London additions on top of the national scale. Inspectors and Chief Inspectors also sit on separate, higher London pay points instead of the national ones.

Amounts currently in force. The London Allowance is paid at a rate set by the Commissioner up to the maximum shown, and officers appointed before 1 September 1994 sit on a lower maximum because they keep housing-related allowances instead. The PRRB recommended uprating both by 3.9% from 1 September 2026; the government awarded 3.5% on pay and no amending determination has been published yet.

Frequently asked questions

What is the police pay rise for 2026?

The government confirmed a 3.5% consolidated award for police officers from 1 September 2026. The calculator uses the resulting annualised basic-pay scales.

Are London allowances included?

Yes. Choose the Metropolitan Police or City of London Police and the calculator adds London Weighting of £3,150, which is pensionable, plus the London Allowance, which is not. The London Allowance is set by the Commissioner up to a maximum of £6,588, so edit the amount if your force pays less. Inspectors and Chief Inspectors also move onto their higher London pay points.

Why are the London allowance amounts not uprated for September 2026?

They are the amounts currently in force. The Police Remuneration Review Body recommended a 3.9% uprating from 1 September 2026, but the government awarded 3.5% on pay and no amending determination has been published, so the calculator carries the in-force figures rather than an assumed increase.

Does the London Allowance count towards my pension?

No. London Weighting is a pensionable addition to pay, so it attracts a member contribution and counts towards pensionable earnings. The London Allowance is non-pensionable — it is taxed and subject to National Insurance and student-loan deductions, but no pension is taken from it.

How are intermediate 2026 points calculated?

The government confirmed the 3.5% award and published current constable starting and top anchors. Other points shown apply 3.5% to the Police Remuneration Review Body's official 2025 scale and round to the nearest pound.

How does the Police Pension rate work?

The 2026 structure uses three salary tiers and full or reduced member rates. The scheme normally assesses the tier using actual pensionable pay in the previous scheme year, so a current-salary estimate can differ after promotion or changed hours.
