Scope

UKTaxTools publishes educational tax calculators, PAYE and National Insurance references, and explanatory articles for UK taxpayers. Content is written for general informational use and does not replace individualized tax advice.

Source hierarchy

  • HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) publications, manuals, and rates and thresholds tables.
  • Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) for benefit and allowance rates.
  • GOV.UK official guidance and HM Treasury Budget documents.
  • Enacted legislation and agency bulletins when thresholds or rules change.

Review cadence

Reviews follow the UK tax calendar rather than an arbitrary schedule:

  • 6 April (tax-year start) — every year-indexed rate and threshold (income tax bands and Personal Allowance, National Insurance thresholds, dividend allowance, CGT annual exempt amount, ISA/pension allowances, student loan thresholds) rolls to the new tax year.
  • Budget / Autumn Statement day — announced changes are applied when confirmed, and affected calculators and guides are reviewed within 48 hours of the announcement.
  • HMRC interest rates — HMRC late-payment interest (Bank of England base rate + 4 percentage points) and repayment interest (base rate − 1 percentage point, minimum 0.5%) are re-checked after every Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) base rate decision, since HMRC itself updates within around 13 working days of a base rate change.
  • Event-driven — legislative changes that take effect mid-cycle (for example the Business Asset Disposal Relief rate step to 14% from 6 April 2025, or the Autumn Budget 2024 CGT rate rise from 30 October 2024) are applied when they take effect, not at the next scheduled pass.

In July 2026 we additionally completed a full-site accuracy review: roughly 200 calculator, reference, and article surfaces were re-checked against primary sources.

Calculator maintenance

  • Tax rates, thresholds, and formulas are defined once in a central tax-year configuration (src/data/taxYears/) and reviewed when official numbers change, so a single verified update flows through every calculator and page that uses the figure.
  • Calculation logic is covered by an automated test suite (currently 1,500+ tests across 100+ test files), including anchor tests that fail loudly if a published rate or threshold is changed by mistake. The full suite runs before any change is published.
  • Every build also verifies internal links sitewide before deploying.
  • Time-sensitive pages display the tax year or update window they cover.
  • Major assumptions are summarized on the page and linked to source material where practical.

See the methodology page for how calculations are structured, per-calculator sources, and how ambiguous rules are handled.

Content updates and corrections

We revise pages when official tax bands, National Insurance thresholds, benefit rates, deadlines, or HMRC administrative guidance change. If a factual issue is reported, we review the underlying source and update the page when needed.

Editorial independence

Rankings, calculator outputs, and article conclusions are based on our reading of official materials and published assumptions, not sponsored placements or advertiser input.
