Who counts as one adult?

The test is the number of adults aged 18 or over who count for Council Tax, not simply the number of people at the address. Your local council decides eligibility and handles applications.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the Council Tax single person discount?

The discount is 25% of the Council Tax bill when only one countable adult lives in the home. A full bill assumes at least two countable adults.

Can I qualify if another adult lives with me?

Possibly. Some adults are disregarded for Council Tax, including many full-time students and certain carers. If everyone else in the home is disregarded, the remaining countable adult may receive the 25% discount.

Does the discount apply automatically?

No. Apply to your local council and tell it if your circumstances change. The council can ask for evidence and review an existing discount.

Does this apply in Northern Ireland?

No. Northern Ireland uses domestic rates rather than Council Tax, so this calculator covers England, Wales and Scotland.
