Frequently asked questions

How is UK car tax calculated?

For a newly registered car, the first 12-month payment is set by CO2 emissions and whether a diesel meets RDE2. From the second payment, most cars pay the standard annual rate, with an extra supplement for qualifying expensive cars in years 2 to 6.

Do electric cars pay road tax?

Yes. Zero-emission cars registered from 1 April 2025 pay VED. In 2026-27, they pay the first-year zero-emission rate and then the same £200 standard rate as other cars. The expensive-car threshold is £50,000 for electric cars.

Does this cover cars registered before April 2017?

No. Cars registered from March 2001 through March 2017 use a different CO2-band system. Use the official GOV.UK rate table linked below for that older regime.

Is car tax the same as company car tax?

No. Vehicle Excise Duty is paid to tax the vehicle. Company car tax is Income Tax on an employment benefit and uses the car list price and Benefit in Kind percentage.
