Frequently asked questions

Can lorry drivers claim overnight subsistence expenses?
Yes. HMRC has agreed flat rate overnight subsistence allowances for lorry drivers who must stay away from home. For 2025–26, this is up to £34.90 per night for UK stays. Payments up to this amount can be made tax-free by employers, or claimed by self-employed drivers.
Are Driver CPC training costs tax deductible?
Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) training required to maintain a professional driving licence may be deductible as work-related training if required to continue in the current role. Costs for obtaining a new licence may not qualify.
Do lorry drivers need to complete a self-assessment?
Most employed lorry drivers are taxed through PAYE and do not need to file self-assessment. Owner-operators and self-employed drivers must register for self-assessment and file a tax return each year.
How is mileage calculated for self-employed lorry drivers?
Self-employed drivers using their own vehicle for work can claim the HMRC approved mileage rate (45p for the first 10,000 business miles, 25p after) or actual vehicle costs. HGVs owned by the business are treated differently — actual costs are claimed.
