Frequently asked questions

Are delivery drivers employed or self-employed for tax?
It depends on your contract. Platform drivers (Deliveroo, Uber Eats) are typically self-employed and must file self-assessment. Drivers employed by a company (Royal Mail, DPD) are taxed through PAYE. HMRC's CEST tool can help determine your status.
Can self-employed drivers claim vehicle costs?
Yes. You can either claim actual vehicle costs (fuel, insurance, repairs, depreciation) or use HMRC's simplified mileage rate of 45p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles and 25p per mile thereafter. You cannot claim both.
Do I need to register for self-assessment as a delivery driver?
If you earn more than £1,000 from self-employment (including delivery work), you must register for self-assessment and file a tax return. Register by 5 October following the end of the tax year in which you started.
Can I claim for my mobile phone?
If you use your personal phone for work (delivery apps, navigation), you can claim a reasonable proportion of the cost. If you have a separate phone used only for work, the full cost is deductible.
