This tool is not an application and cannot confirm eligibility. File the return first, use HMRC's payment-plan checker, and contact HMRC early if the amount is over £30,000, the term is over 12 months, or the online route does not accept your case.
Frequently asked questions
What is an HMRC Time to Pay arrangement?
It is an agreed payment plan for tax you cannot pay on time. HMRC reviews your circumstances and sets the actual amount and duration; this calculator provides an indicative schedule only.
Can I set up Time to Pay online?
For Self Assessment, HMRC offers an online route for eligible bills from £32 up to £30,000, spread over up to 12 monthly instalments, set up within 60 days of the payment due date. Larger debts, longer plans, or cases needing individual support require direct contact with HMRC.
Does HMRC charge interest during a payment plan?
Yes. Late-payment interest continues on the outstanding balance. The current published rate used here is 7.75% from 9 January 2026, and it can change.
Does Time to Pay stop late-payment penalties?
An acceptable arrangement made by the relevant penalty trigger date can prevent penalties that would otherwise arise during the arrangement, but interest still runs. HMRC decides whether an arrangement is acceptable.
