DLA is closed to new adult claims
DLA is closed to new claims for anyone aged 16 to State Pension age — Personal Independence Payment (PIP) has replaced it for that age group. See our PIP Rates page. DLA remains live for two groups: children under 16 (who cannot claim PIP), and adults who were already receiving DLA before PIP rolled out and have not yet been reassessed — they can keep their DLA award under transitional protection unless DWP invites them to claim PIP. DLA rates are still uprated every April for everyone still receiving it.
Scotland: Child Disability Payment
Child Disability Payment, delivered by Social Security Scotland, has replaced DLA for children under 16 living in Scotland. Rates are kept in step with DLA's care and mobility rates shown above.
Tax-free and not means-tested
DLA is tax-free and not means-tested — it is not affected by income, savings, or employment status, and does not need to be declared as taxable income. It sits alongside our Attendance Allowance Rates page (the equivalent benefit for people at State Pension age) and can unlock further support: a carer may be able to claim Carer's Allowance if the person they look after gets the DLA care component at the middle or highest rate.
Frequently asked questions
How much is DLA in 2026/27?
Disability Living Allowance pays two components. Care component: £30.30/week lowest rate, £76.70/week middle rate, or £114.60/week highest rate. Mobility component: £30.30/week lower rate or £80.00/week higher rate. You can be awarded one or both components, so the maximum combined award is £194.60/week.
What are the DLA rates for 2026/27?
From April 2026, the highest care rate rose from £110.40 to £114.60, the middle care rate from £73.90 to £76.70, the lowest care rate from £29.20 to £30.30, and mobility rates from £29.20/£77.05 to £30.30/£80.00, in line with the annual DWP benefits uprating.
Is DLA being replaced?
Yes, for working-age adults. DLA is closed to new claims from anyone aged 16 to State Pension age — they now claim PIP instead. DLA remains open for children under 16, and adults who were already receiving DLA before the PIP rollout can stay on it under transitional protection unless DWP invites them to move to PIP. DLA is still uprated every April in the meantime.
Is DLA taxable or means-tested?
No. DLA is completely tax-free and is not means-tested — it is paid regardless of income, savings, or employment status, and does not need to be declared as taxable income.
What is the difference between DLA and PIP?
PIP has replaced DLA for people aged 16 to State Pension age, and uses a points-based assessment rather than DLA's care/mobility descriptors. DLA's care component (three rates: lowest, middle, highest) broadly maps to PIP's daily living component (two rates: standard, enhanced), and DLA's mobility component (two rates) maps to PIP's mobility component (two rates). The rates are not identical in structure, so an existing DLA award does not automatically convert to the same PIP award.
Can a child get DLA?
Yes. DLA for children under 16 remains open to new claims across the rest of the UK. In Scotland, Child Disability Payment has replaced DLA for children, paying the same rates.
Can a carer claim Carer's Allowance if the person they care for gets DLA?
Yes, if the DLA award is at the right rate. A carer can claim Carer's Allowance if the person they care for receives the DLA care component at the middle rate (£76.70/week) or highest rate (£114.60/week) — the lowest care rate and the mobility component alone do not qualify. The carer must also provide at least 35 hours of care a week.
How is DLA paid?
DLA is usually paid every 4 weeks, directly into your bank account, in the same way as PIP and Attendance Allowance.
