Frequently asked questions

How is a software developer's income taxed in the UK?
Employed developers are taxed through PAYE. In England for 2025–26, you pay 20% income tax on income between £12,570 and £50,270, 40% between £50,270 and £125,140, and 45% above £125,140. National Insurance applies at 8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270, and 2% above.
Can I deduct my home broadband and office costs?
Self-employed developers can deduct a business proportion of broadband, utilities, and other home office costs. Employed developers working from home can claim HMRC's flat rate of £6/week (£312/year) without receipts, or actual additional costs with evidence.
What is IR35 and does it apply to developers?
IR35 applies if you work through a personal service company (PSC) on contracts where HMRC deems you to be a disguised employee. Since April 2021, medium and large private sector clients are responsible for determining IR35 status. Developers working inside IR35 are taxed as employees and lose contractor tax advantages.
Are training courses and online learning subscriptions deductible?
Self-employed developers can deduct training that updates existing skills. Employed developers cannot claim training against PAYE income. However, employer-funded or salary-sacrifice schemes may make training more tax-efficient for employees.
