Frequently asked questions

Can graphic designers claim software subscriptions as a tax deduction?
Yes. Self-employed designers can deduct the full cost of software subscriptions such as Adobe Creative Cloud used exclusively for business. Employed designers cannot usually deduct these costs unless the employer requires them and provides no reimbursement.
How is freelance design income taxed?
Freelance income is taxed as self-employment income through self-assessment. You pay income tax on profits and Class 4 National Insurance. Profits up to your personal allowance (£12,570 for 2025–26) are tax-free.
Can I claim a proportion of my home broadband as a business expense?
Self-employed designers working from home can deduct a reasonable business proportion of broadband costs. If broadband is used 50% for work, you can claim 50% of the cost. Keep records to justify the proportion claimed.
Are design courses and training tax deductible?
Training that updates or improves skills for your current work is deductible. Courses leading to a new qualification or enabling a career change are not deductible for self-assessment purposes. HMRC may query significant training claims.
